Shadows of Inclusivity: Why We are Using Silhouettes for Our Artwork

Inclusivity has become a buzzword in the board game industry, even more so given the current sociopolitical climate of the country and the world. Historically, the industry has been dominated by white, middle-aged males. Thankfully, I’d say that most are trying to be more inclusive, which has been very much appreciated. Lately, women and people of color (POC’s) have taken great strides in the industry. But as the pendulum swings towards inclusivity, there are low grumblings here and there, mainly behind the “safety” of computer screens, that perhaps it is swinging too far the other way. While I personally disagree as a POC myself, it is also incumbent of me as a human being in general to do my best not to ignore or disrespect anyone’s point of view. I mean, that’s one of the main reasons we are where we are today, right? Consequently, all this helped to inform our team’s decision to use silhouettes to represent people in Upstaged and Icon — so everyone can see who they want to see for themselves in the games. Look for the Cool Blue Crew!

T-Shirt frontI’m not the best marketer in the world, by far. In fact, I’d say that I’m subpar. It’s because I don’t necessarily like the limelight, and I’m not very good at tooting my own horn (man, that’s a weird saying). Since I’m not great at talking about myself, I figure one of the best ways to get the word out is by letting my fashion sense do the talking. Hence, new Koalatie Icon T-shirts! “Azul” Was Its Name-O

Azul - boxThere was a game on sale at Target and Azul was its name-o! (sing this to the tune of “B-I-N-G-O”).

Why? Because at its base level, Azul is like new-age Bingo. And now the much-hyped, rightfully hyped game is on sale at Target after winning the prestigious Spiel des Jahres 2018 Award earlier this year. In case you didn’t know, the international award is given to the best game of the year. Continue reading “Azul” Was Its Name-O

What’s in a Name, Part 2: Drop the Mic?

Microphone 2Part 1 of this little set of blog posts discussed probably the most significant thing that has happened to Koalatie Games in the past few weeks. We have changed the name of the game Center Stage to Upstaged! Today, we discuss what seems like a little issue, but I’m wondering if it will have implications in the future. Here’s the issue. Should we drop the exclamation point at the end of the name, “Upstaged!?” Continue reading What’s in a Name, Part 2: Drop the Mic?

Cover Story

Cover - 501 - All 4 versions - 080318As I previously posted, we’ve had to change the name of our game, Center Stage, to Upstaged. As I’m writing this, I feel overall the name change has been a blessing in disguise. “Upstaged” seems to really bring out the excitement that I want the game to elicit, and it seems a bit more marketable.

I recently took to Facebook via Koalatie’s FB page, some board game development groups, and my own personal page to ask opinions on what cover we should go with for the game. The results were a little surprising. Continue reading Cover Story

  • Calendar!
  • Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Keep!

If you haven’t been introduced to the world of Google Drive or something similar, consider me your welcoming party! In the real world, this is like your Microsoft Office suite in the cloud. In the gaming world, it functions similarly, and I’ve barely touched the surface on all that it can do for Koalatie Games. I’m sure many of you are far more versed in Google Drive’s capabilities than me, so please feel free to comment below on what you’ve found and what I can actually improve on. By now, hopefully you’ve jumped into creating a game and you’ve loved it! You want to do more. Awesome! If you plan to do a lot more designing, this is the point where you may feel the first bit of this as being a “jobby” rather than a hobby. You’ve got to get organized. Personally, I like organizing. It makes me feel like I’m productive while preparing to become even more productive. Continue reading Get Organized!

I’m Coming Out

KOALATIE LOGO - colored

My name is Myke, and I am a board game designer. I am outing myself to the world at large as a board game aficionado. I have dreaded the day I would tell others about my true desires, but there comes a time when the truth must come out so we can all move forward.
