Inclusivity has become a buzzword in the board game industry, even more so given the current sociopolitical climate of the country and the world. Historically, the industry has been dominated by white, middle-aged males. Thankfully, I’d say that most are trying to be more inclusive, which has been very much appreciated. Lately, women and people of color (POC’s) have taken great strides in the industry. But as the pendulum swings towards inclusivity, there are low grumblings here and there, mainly behind the “safety” of computer screens, that perhaps it is swinging too far the other way. While I personally disagree as a POC myself, it is also incumbent of me as a human being in general to do my best not to ignore or disrespect anyone’s point of view. I mean, that’s one of the main reasons we are where we are today, right? Consequently, all this helped to inform our team’s decision to use silhouettes to represent people in Upstaged and Icon — so everyone can see who they want to see for themselves in the games. Just a short update. This weekend, me and the wifey are headed to PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia for some games. We’re gonna be at the Unpub Proto Alley event for most of the event, testing out both Upstaged and Icon. Hopefully we’ll be putting the final touches on those and have them ready to launch on Kickstarter next year!
If you’re going to be in town, hit us up! We’ll get some games in together and hopefully some grub. Maybe you can even stroll down to Boyz II Men Boulevard with us. No, seriously! We’ll also be checking out the other historic sites too. Lol.
When: Saturday, November 10th from 11am to 9pm
Where: The Guild House, 16631 Bellflower Blvd, Bellflower, CA 90706
On Saturday, November 10th, Koalatie Games, in conjunction with Axenic Games and The Guild House, will be hosting an Unpub Mini playtesting event! These type of events enable board game designers to test out their latest games in order to tweak and improve them. The event runs from 11am – 9pm at The Guild House in Bellflower, CA, and after each of the four sessions, we will hold a raffle for sweet board games and other awesome prizes. Best of all, the event is FREE to both playtesters and designers. Continue reading Unpub Mini at The Guild House
Part 1 of this little set of blog posts discussed probably the most significant thing that has happened to Koalatie Games in the past few weeks. We have changed the name of the game Center Stage to Upstaged! Today, we discuss what seems like a little issue, but I’m wondering if it will have implications in the future. Here’s the issue. Should we drop the exclamation point at the end of the name, “Upstaged!?” Continue reading What’s in a Name, Part 2: Drop the Mic?
As I previously posted, we’ve had to change the name of our game, Center Stage, to Upstaged. As I’m writing this, I feel overall the name change has been a blessing in disguise. “Upstaged” seems to really bring out the excitement that I want the game to elicit, and it seems a bit more marketable.
I recently took to Facebook via Koalatie’s FB page, some board game development groups, and my own personal page to ask opinions on what cover we should go with for the game. The results were a little surprising. Continue reading Cover Story
Sometimes we hit bumps in the road. Sometimes a bump causes our car to launch into the air, and where and how you land…well, no one knows. After a long few weeks of a little naming dilemma, we have officially renamed our game about discovering the next big musical trio, Center Stage, to Upstaged! So what necessitated this change? Continue reading What’s in a Name, Part 1: Upstaged! Takes Center Stage
